Film Review

DR. GIGGLES should have been a lean, mean, gritty, surreal little horror movie. It is enjoyable, is never boring, but is a Kitchen Sink Movie, meaning there's everything in it but. Sometimes less really is more and a bit less would have been advised here. The primary influence on the film appears to have been Sam Raimi (star Larry Drake — who is excellent — was hot off the success of DARKMAN) and Tim Burton (who's BATMAN had just ushered in the era of 1990s overkill event films), neither of whom are known for their restraint.DR. GIGGLES is actually so busy and cluttered that it's story becomes overwhelmed in a cacophony of arty camera angles, dark cartoonish neon lighting, plot twists, secondary characters, background development sketches, musical segues, billowing clouds of steam, leering closeup faces, hysterical supporting players, over-choreographed shock sequences, jam-packed picture frames that never sit still, excessive cutting for continuity, obscure character mo…

This movie starts out as an over the top slapstick effort, but then bails out on that and gets surprisingly serious. It's the start of yet another straight-forward slasher, which is pretty unwelcome. Stalk and slash, boring dialogue, more stalk and slash. There isn't much excitement in the plot, but I appreciate the variation in weapons though, that kept the mood lively. The ending isn't too bad either. But throughout I was just wondering who the hell makes a slasher in '92. I don't think people ever cared less. A re-write wouldn't have hurt, perhaps bring in more comedy because this is not really working out. I'm not saying this movie totally blows, there are some cool scenes, but it's so incredibly redundant it can vanish into thin air every second.

This film has changed my life. Combining amazing cinematography, with a gripping plot line and spine chilling suspense, Dr Giggles is a film truly deserving of the several Oscars it failed to win. Viewers will be sure to be gripped by the trilling plot line, which sees an insane doctors son, who burst from his own mothers corpse clutching a scalpel, glue them to the edge of their seat throughout. Combining cutting edge special effects with some of the greatest horror acting you will have ever seen, Dr Giggles is the motion picture equivalent of having sex in a theme park while on heroin. Not to be missed. The plot line, which some may say is overused, follows a gang of unruly teenagers, as the struggle to find their way through the torments of love, sex, and commitment. Which one would think would be hard enough, without being attacked by a phycopathic doctor. For me, the coup de gras of the entire film is the culmination of the hall of mirrors scene, in which the poor teens are chased…
